SIGHT: Elsa is quite tall for her era at 5'6", slender, with platinum blonde hair, large blue eyes, and pale skin with a very faint dusting of freckles across her nose and cheeks. She's somewhat fit, but not particularly athletic; as far as sports go, she's more likely to fence than go out riding. Her manner of dress is usually influenced more by comfort than style, but her bearing gives her a regal appearance nonetheless. She has excellent posture, though she's learning to be a tiny bit more relaxed. She is left-handed.
» HAIR COLOR: platinum blonde
» EYE COLOR: blue
» HEIGHT: 5'6"
» BUILD: willowy
» DOMINANT HAND: right
» TATTOOS: none
» PIERCINGS: ears only

» DISTINGUISHING MARKS: Faint freckles over her nose, cheeks, and shoulders. Very pale.

» DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS: Usually dressed in ice. May occasionally be found sporting scrapes and bruises from fights, though she tends to keep herself well-shielded from physical attack.

» STYLE: Though she prefers looser clothing these days, she has no qualms about more revealing clothes than would have been typical in her time. She doesn't often wear pants, though, and is still working out how to feel about short skirts worn on their own (with leggings is more likely for her, though more for appearance than warmth). The weather has little to no effect on her wardrobe, except for concessions she makes to the expectations of others (i.e. dressing more "warmly" because everyone else is cold and it isn't worth the odd looks if she wears a strapless dress out in the snow, etc). Her hair is usually worn back in a long, thick braid, and her color palette runs to blues, grays, white, with some purple and green as a nod to the colors of her homeland. Sometimes, though, her clothes are straight up just made of ice. She enjoys glitter and capes.

As Snowdrop, she just wears a domino mask of ice and usually a dress much like the one she arrived in, but shorter.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS AND MANNERISMS: At first, Elsa may come across as demure but aloof, even cold (no pun intended). She's likely to hold people at arm's length, in part because it wouldn't do for a monarch to be overly intimate and familiar, but mostly that's just a solid cover for her introverted nature and her anxieties. Rather than shy, she seems sure of herself, polite, and gracious, though she's every bit as capable of coming across as condescending, depending on the circumstances. She smiles, vaguely friendly, but is largely withdrawn.

With time, however, it becomes clear that, while sure of her intellectual and governing abilities, she is not at all sure of herself. She is shy now, thanks to years of self-imposed isolation, and when anxious, her body language shows it clearly. She folds in on herself, wraps her arms around her waist, loosens her excellent posture and slumps down, her shoulders heavy; it's not a matter of relaxing her body, it's a different kind of tension, pulling her inwards. Unless using her abilities, she is not given to expansive motions or gesturing. She may cover her mouth when she laughs, but is otherwise likely to keep her hands neatly folded in front of her. However, when relaxed, she can be incredibly warm, cheerful, even gregarious and mischievous. Underneath her uncertainty remains the eager, playful little girl she once was; it just takes time for her to thaw.

SOUND: Elsa's voice is slightly lower than might be expected at first glance, and her accent unexpectedly American despite her Nordic upbringing. Her speech is soft, gentle, and coolly polite, though she is often very firm as well, in a matter of fact way. She's accustomed to giving orders and to being obeyed, and can sound much more confident than she is, but she's always polite about it.

SMELL: Cold, like frost, and clean. Not a floral clean like gardenia soap, but the cold, crisp clean of mountain spring water. Some kind of minty shampoo. Occasionally a light perfume, leaning more towards a spicy floral like chrysanthemum. Books and ink. Flowers of all kinds from working at The Secret Garden. Chocolate. Jessica.

TOUCH: She's not very tactile with others — in fact, she generally shies away from touching others — but if touch does occur, Elsa is slightly, but noticeably, cooler to the touch than the average person, especially her hands.

internal
▶ POSITIVE TRAITS: smart, tactful, kind, thoughtful, generous, loyal, honorable, creative, playful, responsible, meticulous, a strong desire to do good

▶ NEGATIVE TRAITS: nervous, withdrawn, moody, headstrong, cocky, unwilling to share her burdens with others, a tendency to shoulder all burdens as her own

▶ LIKES: Anna, Jessica, winter, chocolate. Helping others, being in charge. Art, poetry, fencing, music. History and geography. Studying in general, truthfully. Pizza. Krumkake. Exploring everything around her. Trying new things, even if they make her nervous.

▶ DISLIKES: Gloves. Lost time. The possibility of losing control. Her room getting messy. Enclosed spaces. Overly crass humor. Misguided ambition. Bullies.

▶ GOALS: To learn how to handle her anxiety; to improve her control of her abilities; to be a good sister; to one day rule Arendelle wisely and well.

▶ MENTAL HEALTH: Elsa has an undiagnosed anxiety disorder and struggles with situational depression, although the latter is less of an issue now that the triggers for it have mostly been removed from her life.

▶ PHYSICAL HEALTH: Elsa's temperature runs a little lower than most people's, and extreme cold seems to have no effect whatsoever on her body. Her blood, organs, respiratory system, etc., all work normally regardless of how cold she might get. Her skin is always just a tiny bit cool to the touch — not uncomfortably so, but it's certainly noteworthy on a warm summer's day. She is in otherwise fairly good and unextraordinary health.

▶ MAGICAL ABILITIES: Elsa has the ability to create and manipulate snow and ice. To an extent, this also means some manipulation of water, and the ability to thaw ice and melt snow, causing it to dissipate into the air, though I imagine if she wanted just to melt it and cause flooding instead, she would also be capable of that. Though unpracticed in these abilities, she is extremely powerful. Once she learns greater control, this could be very useful.

At the moment, despite her best intentions, it could easily prove dangerous, as her powers often respond to her emotions. She's much better now at reversing the effects, but there is one thing she absolutely cannot do on her own: fixing the injuries caused when someone is struck by her ice. These strikes causing a person to become very, very, very cold, leaving them vulnerable to freezing to death. Someone with other magical abilities may be able to remove the ice and magic from the injured party. However, if the ice should strike their heart, only an act of true love can reverse its effects and prevent them from freezing to solid ice.

Elsa possesses no other magical abilities, nor can she shield herself from being discovered by those who can suss magic out in others. Because she was born with her powers, the cause of them is unknown even to her.
» NOTE: Because Elsa's powers seem to be tied strongly to her emotions, the appearance of the ice and snow is affected by her moods. When Elsa is frightened or anxious, the ice she produces is likely to come out in shards and spikes; it is much more sharp, angular, linear. When she's calm, the ice is much smoother, gentler, more fluid, flowing in circles and curves. Since she's still working on learning to control her abilities, her powers sometimes betray her moods without her noticing. For example, when she's feeling upset or insecure, it may begin to snow, and the more upset she is, the heavier the snowfall.

INFORMATION FOR PSYCHICS AND OTHER MAGIC USERS: Feel free to talk to me for more in-depth information if the need arises (comments can be left on this post, in fact, if you'd rather not email). The contents of her thoughts and feelings will, of course, change greatly from thread to thread and are dependent on situation. There are some things of note, though, which are constants.
» Elsa has no shield against such abilities, so her thoughts are fair game.

» Elsa has magic powers of her own of which she is very aware, as noted above.

» Her primary concern is and always will be her sister Anna. She prioritizes others before herself and focuses on her duty to others.

» Elsa suffers from anxiety and depression. While the depression is largely situational and thus much less of a concern here in Darrow, she still struggles to cope with her anxiety. As such, her thoughts can be very circuitous, chaotic, repetitive, disordered, unfocused, and overly harsh towards herself, predominantly when she is having a panic attack. When she is not panicking, this is much less the case, though some of that circuitousness remains. She may seem confident, but she can be very shy and uncertain of herself underneath, and her anxieties are heavily based in her abilities.

When it comes to Elsa's abilities, I will never have her directly strike a character without player permission. I also ask that you please talk to me before choosing to have a character struck by ice, as this has enormous ramifications for both your character and mine. Characters may be otherwise affected by Elsa's abilities however you see fit, but direct strikes must be discussed in advance.

other items of note:
Frozen is emphatically not meant to be historical fiction. Obviously it is a fairy tale entirely rooted in fantasy. That said, it's also the feature in which Disney has invested the most research and devotion to historical accuracy. For this reason (and because it's fun for me), while the fantasy setting gives me free rein with many details, I will also be drawing heavily on European culture of the 1840s, specifically in Norway, to influence Elsa's worldview, knowledge, and upbringing.
